MCC Hires Dave Hartman as New Head Softball Coach
Marshalltown Community College (MCC) is pleased to announce the hiring of Dave Hartman as the new head coach for the Tigers' softball program. Hartman brings a distinguished coaching career spanning nearly four decades, marked by a commitment to developing student-athletes and a history of championship-level success.
MARSHALLTOWN – Marshalltown Community College (MCC) is pleased to announce the hiring of Dave Hartman as the new head coach for the Tigers' softball program. Hartman brings a distinguished coaching career spanning nearly four decades, marked by a commitment to developing student-athletes and a history of championship-level success.
Hartman joins MCC after serving as the head softball coach at Creston High School, where he led his team to a conference championship in 2023 and a runner-up finish in 2024. In 2025, his team launched 52 home runs enroute to another Hawkeye Ten title with a perfect 20-0 record. While his recent success is in softball, his coaching experience with the sport began at Diagonal High School, where he coached both baseball and softball and led the 1991 softball team to a regional final.
His coaching career is also highlighted by his long tenure as a high school baseball coach, during which he also coached boys and girls basketball, volleyball, wrestling, football, and track. From 2017 to 2021, he served as the head baseball coach at Southeast Polk High School, where he compiled a record of 103-47. He was a key part of the coaching staff for two state championship teams in 2014 and 2015, and he also served as the head coach for the 2015 IHSBCA All Star Large Schools team and the Iowa Junior Select team from 2006 to 2012. His extensive resume also includes head coaching roles at Carroll, Don Bosco, Corning, West Central Valley, and Hoover High Schools, as well as collegiate experience as an assistant baseball coach at Southwestern Community College, and the University of Dubuque. Hartman was also one of the original founders of the Rams Baseball Travel Club.
Throughout his career, Hartman has coached had a hand in over 900 wins as a head coach or lead assistant, in 38 years of varsity coaching. He has been a pivotal figure in the development of over 90 players who went on to play college baseball, including multiple NCAA Division I recruits and professional players, such as MLB Gold Glove winner Jeremy Hellickson. His dedication has earned him eight nominations for District Coach of the Year, winning the honor in 2018, as well as three Assistant Coach of the Year awards. A private instructor for over 30 years, Hartman has a deep passion for teaching the fundamentals of the game.

In addition to his coaching background, Hartman has a diverse professional history, with roles including a Psychology Teacher, Athletic Director, Talented and Gifted Instructor, At-Risk Teacher, and School-to-Work Coordinator.
