The Marshalltown Community College Women's Basketball team opened the 2026 season on a high note, clinching a dominant 74-49 victory over Southwestern Community College.
The Tigers were consistent throughout the game, successfully outscoring the Spartans in every quarter of play. This relentless offensive pressure and defensive effort allowed MCC to maintain control of the tempo from start to finish, securing a comfortable win to start the new year.
The victory was fueled by a balanced scoring attack, with five different Tigers finishing the game in double figures. Sophomore Olivia Heartwell led all scorers with an 18-point performance, providing the spark the Tigers needed to pull away early. She was joined in double digits by Shenell Stewart, who contributed 13 points, and Jazmine Williams, who added 12. Rounding out the balanced effort were Ariyanah Custard and Kenijae Cherry, each of whom chipped in 10 points to help seal the win.
Looking ahead, the Tigers face a demanding week with three games scheduled in just six days. The team returns to their home court at the MCC Student Activity Center tomorrow, Monday, January 5, to host North Central Missouri College at 5:30 pm. The Tigers will hit the road on Wednesday, January 7, for a 5:30 pm tip-off against Southeastern Community College. The busy stretch concludes back at MCC on Saturday, January 10, when they host Iowa Central Community College at 1:00 pm.
